What Is Spirometry?
Spirometry is a quick, non-invasive breathing test that measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast you can exhale it. It is one of the most common and useful lung function tests and is performed right in our Chicago-area offices, with results available during your visit.
Why Your Allergist May Recommend a Breathing Test
- Diagnosing asthma – spirometry helps confirm whether symptoms such as cough, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath are caused by asthma.
- Measuring asthma control – repeat testing shows whether your airways are improving on your current treatment plan.
- Checking response to medication – testing before and after a bronchodilator (rescue inhaler) shows how reversible airway narrowing is.
- Guiding advanced therapy – results help determine whether treatments such as biologic injections may be appropriate.

What to Expect During Spirometry
The test takes only a few minutes. You will sit comfortably, wear a soft nose clip, take the deepest breath you can and then blow out as hard and fast as possible into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer. Our staff will coach you through each attempt, and the test is usually repeated a few times to ensure accurate results. In some cases you will be given a rescue inhaler and tested again after a short wait.
Spirometry is safe and painless. Some patients feel briefly lightheaded or short of breath after exhaling forcefully, which passes quickly. Your provider may ask you to hold certain inhalers before the test, so please follow any instructions given when you schedule.
